Funny story about the name of this place. Originally called Abha (Brightness) Nagri (City), it has become Abhaneri because of mispronounciation.

The city hosts the deepest and largest Indian stepwell, built in the 9th century and located in front of a 10th century temple for the Goddess of Joy and Happiness, Harshat Mata.

Used to gather the rain water, the stepwell aimed at protecting from the heath, serving for leisure purposes, social gathering and religious ceremonies.
